Meet Maria Martinez

Born in Ohio USA from a Colombian father and an Irish/German American born mother, Maria studied hairdressing at Pivot Point International in Chicago and started working in 1990 at Mitchells Salon and Day Spa in Cincinnati.  Her ambition at that time: injecting a solid personal signature into mainstream commercial hairdressing.  To ensure she was on track with trends, she frequently took advantage of educational courses, in particular at The Vidal Sassoon Academy in California and London for essential foundation training.  She would soon become herself a trainer at Wella North America, serve as a member on the Style Council and a Hair Care consultant for Procter and Gamble USA.

Italian way of life in 2002, she took a one-way flight to Milan, with a pair of scissors and her Rosetta Stone Italian for beginners.  The Fashion capital is actually the main turning point in her life.  When she landed, she did not know one single word of Italian, and most importantly, had to learn a culture, which was the total opposite of her American background, where hairstyling is an art before being a business.  The stint at Toni & Guy Milan was the new beginning that changed her professional prospective.

How The City Coiffure started-from Stockholm to Dublin. After 5 years in Italy, Maria moved to Stockholm and collaborated with Sachajuan Hair Salon.  In a moment, she understood that the most important and interesting part of her work was not only to create the most sophisticated hairstyles, but also make people feel beautiful and to work with who they are… “A real hairdresser for real people”.

When she then moved to Dublin, she found herself in a young, international, changing city in the middle of an economic downturn where more and more people wanted to stand out and be who they are as is.

Intrigued by a notion she decided to photograph and showcase these “real” people on a blog as inspiration for others and create a platform for her own work.

Today Maria shares her professional life between Robert Chambers Salon and The City Coiffure.
